Bling it On! But How Much is Too Much?
Posted by Show Ring Outfitters on 2nd Jun 2019
The saddle seat riding habit is a time-honored tradition that dates back to over a century ago, when horse owners would dress in their finest attire to ride into town. Now in 2019, equestrian athletes still choose to sport the “saddle suit” in the competition arena. Riding habit styles have been updated over the years to reflect more current tailoring trends, but the overall presentation of saddle seat riding remains the same. We are known for our flashy horses and conservative outfits. However, over the past several years, exhibitors have adapted new trends that have helped modernize the look of the traditional saddle suit. Shiny fabrics and bolder patterns and colors are now quite popular in the show ring, particularly with the younger generation of riders.
At any given show, the majority of today's riders can be seen wearing embellishments such as back number magnets decorated with crystals. Some choose to take it a step further with coordinating accessories like rhinestone barrettes and crystal collar bars. Many top riders have also been spotted carrying whips donned in Swarovski crystals. While many riders and trainers have embraced such updates to the saddle seat look, others raise the question, “Is there such a thing as too much bling?” The answer varies drastically depending on the individual rider, the division they are showing in, and even the breed of horse they ride.
Here is an example of a tasteful amount of "bling". All pieces are nicely coordinating, without taking things over the top.
Everyone has their own opinions of what is appropriate when it comes to how they present themselves in the show ring, and that’s okay. Some riders prefer to remain true to tradition, while others like to branch out and add a touch of personality to their look. It’s the 21st century, and we’re all still riding in essentially men’s suits – so, if you want to dress it up a little bit when you show, go for it! Feel free to choose items that align with your personal style, but keep in mind that saddle seat riding is a very traditional sport, and some trainers (and even judges) may have different opinions of what is appropriate. As a rule of thumb, make sure that any embellishments you add to your outfit deliver a tasteful amount of flair, as it can be easy to get carried away and end up looking over the top. Always make sure to follow the attire guidelines for your division, and you’re good to go.
If you’re new to showing and unsure what accessories you need, we are happy to help. We also recommend consulting your trainer, as many tend to prefer that their riders present themselves a certain way. However, no one knows your style and tastes better than you do. Wear whatever makes you feel happy and put together!
